The Forrester Gallery, Oamaru

July 15, 2019

Oamaru’s art gallary, The Forrester Gallery, is yet another of New Zealand’s cultural sites that has been mothballed recently. I wont try to figure out what’s going on now but will collect a few newsclippings while they’re still online.

“The Forrester Gallery is housed in a spectacular neo-classical building originally constructed in 1884 for the Bank of New South Wales…the Forrester Gallery was opened in 1983.”- Culture Waitaki

”….likely to require the gallery to be closed for most of December and into January 2019….Officers will be working hard to have the gallery back open to the public as soon as possible so that it can continue its planned summer programme.”

“Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher was not overly concerned about the closure over the holiday period…”These things happen, it’s just what it is.””- Gallery closed for rest of year after mould discovery; ODT, 12 December 2018; Wayback Machine

“Oamaru’s 1882 public art gallery – closed for maintenance since the end of last year – has presented ”surprise after surprise after surprise”, Waitaki deputy mayor Melanie Tavendale says….A $575,000 budget…A targeted reopening of the gallery in July 2019 was also approved.”- Forrester Gallery full of surprises, ODT Feb 2019

“Oamaru’s public art gallery will not open its doors to the public again this year, as remediation and capital works continue on the 1882 building”

“From May 21 until yesterday, the Waitaki District Council had dodged questions from the Otago Daily Times about the project’s timeframe….the gallery would “hopefully” open in early 2020, not next month as originally planned.”
